Socialist Party want to change the law on the release of ETA prisoners

The Socialist Party PSOE says that it is planning legal changes which will mean that a released ETA prisoner will not be able to choose to live close to victims of the Basque terrorist group.
The subject is currently highlighted by the news that long-term ETA activist, Iñaki de Juana Chaos, who is released on August 2, is set to live in his mother’s flat in San Sebastian, in the same street as several families who have been victims of ETA. He has served 21 years for carrying out 25 killings when part of ETA’s Madrid commando.
El Mundo newspaper reveals today that the terrorist’s wife, Irati Aranzabal, purchased the flat in July 2007, and by doing so avoided the payment of eight million € in compensation which should have gone to ETA victims.
President of Congress, José Bono, commented yesterday that De Juana Chaos was a criminal and that he would not want to live near him, but the law was the law and this also guaranteed his freedom of residence.
Socialist spokesman in Congress, José Antonio Alonso, said the party would be looking at legal reform, within the limits of the Constitution, to avoid such a case happening again.
