email this article The Monarch was presenting the ex Prime Minister with the Spanish Royal Families highest distinction.King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have carried out a private visit to see the ex Spanish Prime Minister, Adolfo Suárez, who has been suffering from a degenerative illness for some years.
Adolfo Suárez governed Spain between the years of 1976 to 1981, and was in power when the system of the Spanish regions was established.
The King gave him the Collar of the Insignia of the Golden Fleece, which was awarded to the ex Prime Minister last year. It’s the highest distinction to be granted by the Spanish Royal Family and has only been awarded 17 times in the past 30 years. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is among the recipients.
The visit by the Spanish King and Queen yesterday was a very personal time with the Suárez family, and it’s known that the monarch and Adolfo Suárez became close friends during Spain’s journey into democracy.
Tragedy has hit the Adolfo Suárez family over the years, with the death of his wife Amparo and his daughter Mariam, with another daughter Sonsoles suffering from cancer.
