Marriages were organised between local gypsy women and sub-Saharan immigrants.

National Police in Alicante have broken up a gang who organised illegal marriages of convenience between local gypsy women and sub-Saharan immigrant men so that the latter could obtain residence in Spain.

The women were paid money for their services and police say that they have arrested the 36 year old head of the gang. He will appear in court in Alicante shortly, and is reported to already have an arrest order outstanding against him for drug trafficking.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Foreigners Office in Alicante, with the immigration office in Madrid and the Balearic Island Police.
