email this article The Spanish Prime Minister meets the Leader of the Opposition in the Moncloa Palace at 11am this morning. The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, meets today with the leader of the Partido Popular opposition, Mariano Rajoy, for the first time in this parliamentary legislature.
Rajoy will be taking with him the P.P. proposals on how to reduce state spending this year, but the Prime Minister has already made it clear that he wants to maintain spending levels, especially for social projects, although he will show some austerity in the public accounts to the PP leader. Zapatero has said that he has ‘the best disposition’ ahead of today’s meeting, but that he will reject any cut back in the budget.
Agreement between the two is seen to be more likely on the reform of the judiciary in Spain, and there will be opposition support for the fight against ETA following the arrest of the Vizcaya commando yesterday.
The meeting gets underway in the Moncloa Palace at 11am.
