El País has a photo of the arrest in Bilbao of the man said to have been the leader of the cell, Arkaitz Goikoetxea.
The paper headlines that the Ministry for the Interior has dismantled the most active ETA unit since the end of the cease fire, and says the success will stop the ETA campaign of attacks over the summer.
El Mundo says that the ‘hard nucleus’ of the most active group in ETA has been dismantled. The paper says that nine members of the ‘Vizcaya complex’ were arrested – and they are the alleged killers of the Guardia Civil in Legutiano. The paper says the leader of the group Arkaitz Goikoetxea was living in the flat belonging to the girlfriend of the person responsible for the youth section of Batasuna, ETA’s outlawed political wing.
ABC headlines that the Guardia Civil have arrested those responsible for the latest ETA attacks.
The success against ETA is also the lead in the two Catalan papers, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya,
El País notes that the British mobile phone company Vodafone has blamed Spain for its poor results round the world. The paper note the statement from the company adversely affected the Telefónica share price in Spain yesterday.
El País tells us that the autonomous regions in Spain have rejected the Government’s finance plan for them. The paper says that the rejection of Pedro Solbes’ plan came at the first meeting of the Fiscal Policy Council, and that the spokespeople from Cataluña, Madrid and Valencia were especially critical, considering the proposals to be ‘insufficient’.
El Mundo tells us that Cataluña has passed an Education law where a third hour of the Castellano language is not included.
There is plenty more coverage of the arrest of Radovan Karadzic in Belgrade yesterday. El País has a photo of his current bearded appearance, and says that he the man accused of genocide was disguised as a healer, working in alternative medicine.
El Mundo also has a front page photos and says Karadzic wrote poetry for children and collaborated in a magazine called ‘healthy life’.
ABC has front page – before and after pictures, and Público leads with the phrase – a man responsible for genocide dressed up as a healer.
Público notes that the Prime Minister has promised no spending cuts ahead of his meeting with Mariano Rajoy today, and also notes that medicines for babies are now to be free in Andalucía.
Staying with international news, El Mundo notes that the European Court for Human Rights has said the Sogecable case in Spain was not carried out by judges who were independent or impartial. The Court has ordered that ex Judge Javier Gómez de Liaño be compensated with 5,000 €. Liañó has said it is very worrying that the two highest judicial courts in Spain have been condemned.
ABC also headlines that the magistrates who judged Liaño were not impartial.
Back in Spain, El Mundo tells us that Roca has ‘thrown in the towel’ and said he paid 73,800 € to Judge Urquía so he could be helped ‘in some matters’.
And finally,
ABC tells us of a new transplant technique which avoids rejection of animal organs.
