email this article Financial news dominates with the planned growth of Gas Natural.El País leads with financial news and says that Gas Natural has revolutionised the energy map in Spain with the purchase of 45.3% of electricity company Fenosa. The paper says the deal will cost about 17 billion.
Gas Natural being based in Barcelona, the story leads the papers in the region with El Periódico headlining that the company has managed to form an energy giant.
El Mundo leads with the headline that indignation is increasing among the families of the victims of De Juana Chaos and Beloki, two ETA terrorists set for release. The paper quotes the brother of one of those killed, Jiménez Becerril, who says that if the Government really wanted to do so, they could keep the terrorist in prison.
ABC leads with the story and notes that the National Court is now investigating the assets of De Juana, just two days before his release from prison. One of the areas under investigation is the tax paid on royalties obtained by his books written in prison.
Público leads with the great August get-away, and says that half the country will be on the move. The paper prints a guide on how not to get stuck in a jam.
El País highlights a new plan announced by the Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, yesterday. Spanish emigrants will be able to vote in elections here over the internet in 2012, and they Government says they want those living outside the country to have their own deputies.
In international stories, El Pais has a photo of the new clashes on the West Bank. The paper says that three Palestinians were injured. The paper notes that the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, has announced his is to go, the paper says because of a corruption case.
El País says that Turkish Islamists can relax after the new constitution will not declare them to be illegal.
El País notes that Radovan Karadzic will appear before the court in the Hague today accused of genocide and crimes against humanity.
El Mundo has a photo of the man, once again with his beard shaved off.
El Mundo notes that the Minister for Tax and the Economy, Pedro Solbes, has now admitted that the Spanish economy will not increase over the next six months.
El País tells us that a new medicine stops Alzheimer’s in its tracks. The paper says it is in an experimental phase but has surprised many experts by its effectiveness. The name – Rember.
ABC also gives the story prominence and notes that the clinical trials have been taking place at Aberdeen University in Scotland.
El Mundo notes the failed humour of a Catalan Councillor who on his blog has encouraged the Catalans to sponsor a poor child in Extremadura. Understandably many in Extremadura are upset by the piece.
ABC has a large front page photo of the fake poster drawn up by Lluis Suñé, who has since apologised.
And finally,
El País among the papers to highlight a new Van Gogh, found under another Van Gogh thanks to a new x-ray technique developed by German, Dutch and Belgium scientists. A previously unseen portrait by the artist has been revealed.
