email this article There are concerns by some in Spain that the sinking has led to environmental damage and that the accident clean up has been mis-handled.The European Commission is to investigate whether there was any environmental negligence from the authorities following the sinking of the New Flame cargo vessel in Algeciras Bay in August last year.
The boat carrying a cargo of scrap metal went down after hitting a Danish tanker on August 12, 2007, and a year on still some of the cargo and remains of the vessel remain close to shore.
The Andalucian Defensor del Pueblo, José Chamizo, has commented that it would not be the first time that British authorities have been found Licking in environmental matters.
Ecologist group Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción have already presented a complaint against the Gibraltar government for their alleged bad management of the accident, while the regional government, Junta de Andalucía, has opened two official complaints, one against the boats insurer and the other against the United Kingdom.
