email this article A lack of rain could see water restrictions introduced in November. The reduction in water consumption seen over the summer in Málaga, compared to previous years, has had a beneficial effect on the water reserves, but it has also meant a reduction in income for the Emasa water company which finds itself now having to increase the price of water to fund new infrastructure projects. It claims reduced consumption has meant a 12 million € reduction in its income since 2005, and they say that unless the rains come to the Málaga region in the autumn then they will have to introduce water restrictions from November.
Water cuts have not been ruled out, but the first measure to be introduced will be reduction in water pressure which will affect some areas of Málaga city and some taller buildings. The water company is to present a plan this month for a water rate increase for next year and that could mean prices go up by as much as 25%.
Meanwhile the Málaga town of Almogía has been suffering water supply problems since last March. Currently the town only has water for an hour a day, with local residents demanding an improvement in supply.
