email this article Patxo Zabaleta is among those saying that such a debate is underway, although it is complicated by the fact that the prisoners are spread in jails across the country. The General Coordinator of Basque independence party, Araler, Patxi Zabaleta, has said he has ‘indications’ that there is a debate taking place among ETA prisoners across Spain on the end of the armed struggle. He said that there were ‘different opinions and the prisoners had the right to express them’.
However he said that the debate could not ‘evolve and flower’ because the prisoners were separated in jails across the country.
It comes as the Cadena Ser radio station has claimed that ETA prisoners being held in jail in Córdoba have asked for arms to be laid down.
Arnaldo Otegi, leader of Batasuna, the outlawed political wing of ETA, called last Saturday for ‘dialogue and negotiation’ to resolve the ‘Basque political problem’. He said ‘the brave step was needed to create the conditions for dialogue and the ending of violence and the armed struggle’.
Most ETA prisoners renounce violence while in jail and when they are, in many cases, negotiating an early release. Prison sources say there are nearly 600 ETA prisoners being held in 53 different Spanish jails.
