The number is the lowest seen since 1964.

The so-called ‘Operación Verano’ traffic plans ended the summer break with 450 deaths on Spanish roads. The number is the lowest seen since 1964 and has been welcomed by the Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba who said it was because of the ‘intelligence of the drivers’ who had stepped their return from their holidays at the end of August.

The 450 tally for the number of deaths on the roads of Spain in July and August was 89 fewer than last year at the same time and the comparison with 1964 is impressive when you remember that at that time there were just two million vehicles on the road compared to the 30 million now, and four million drivers compared to the 25 million now.
