Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, said the new law would be a good one.

Legal experts and gynaecologists are to help the Government to draw up a new abortion law in Spain, which will be presented to parliament next year. The current law on abortion was introduced in 1985 and has not been revised since then.

Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, said yesterday that the law would be presented in the first half of next year, as the Government `started to draw up a new law’. She said it would be more than a reform of the current legislation and would have the intention of protecting the fundamental rights and judicial security of both women and health workers.

There are reports in the Spanish press today indicating that the Government wants to introduce free abortion in the first 21 weeks.
