German Astrophysicist dies in telescope accident

Florian Goebel died after falling eight metres from the new Magic II telescope in La Palma.

The 35 year old German astrophysicist, Florian Goebel , from the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich, considered to be the person most responsible for the new Magic II reflective telescope built in La Palma, has died after falling from a height of eight metres as he was changing one of the lenses on the apparatus.

The official inauguration of the telescope, set for the 19th of this month has been suspended.

An autopsy is being carried out to try and establish whether the man suffered some sort of fainting attack before he fell.
