There has been far less rainfall than normal to the La Viñuela reserviour this year.

The drought decree in force in the Guadalhorce Valley and Malaga City is expected to be extended to the Axarquía area in a few weeks time. It comes as only 2 hectometres of water have entered the La Viñuela reservoir so far this hydrographical year when 40 can usually be expected.

Antonio Rodríguez Leal from the Cuenca Mediterranea Andaluza, said the drought decree would be extended unless in rained very heavily and soon. He said they were prepared for what would be a fifth and sixth year of drought. A new underground water source, being taken from the Rio Vélez would give 500 litres per second in some six months time; that’s equivalent to the entire domestic demand in the Axarquía, but the problem of supplying farmers would continue.

Meanwhile the new connection between the Western Costa del Sol and Málaga city is now expected to be completed in March. 51% of the current water supply in Málaga city now comes from underground sources.
