The Guardia Civil are accused of demanding money in exchange for irregularities in the customs department of the airport.

Ten Civil Guards have been arrested at Gran Canaria airport for turning a blank eye to some customs procedures in exchange for money. They now face bribery, fraud and money laundering charges, among others.

The victims of the fraud were often foreigners with a poor command of Spanish, who were often asked for money to speed up customs procedures. The irregularities were usually linked to the control of luggage or the declaration of foreign currency.
