The Spanish Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has placed seven provinces on alert for heavy snow falls today. They are Asturias, Cantabria, Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, Álava, Navarra and Castellón.
Snow of some 15 cms in depth is forecast in these areas and several mountain passes in the north of the country have been closed to traffic.
Where there has not been snow, heavy rain has been falling with San Sebastian and Bilbao particularly affected.
The weather brought traffic chaos on the access roads to Madrid yesterday with hold-ups reaching as long as 60kms for a time in the rush hour. The temperature at the Puerto de Navacerrada to the north of the capital fell to seven degrees below zero, and 15cms of snow was recorded.
León has also seen heavy snow falls.
Along the Mediterranean coast there will be an improvement in the weather today, but a return to rain is forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
