New low engergy LED lights will save on the electricity bill.

Despite the crisis Murcia is one of the few Spanish cities to up its spending on Christmas lights this year. The budget this year is 346,000 € compared to 309,000 € last year.

The Murcia lights were switched on last Friday, and remain illuminated until January 7. 82% of the lights are low energy LED bulbs which will save the council 1,400 on the electricity bill.

12 other main cities across the country have reduced the lighting and decorations in their main streets this year. Many cities are also cutting back on the time the lights are on.
Ecologists groups have already criticised those who have not.
