Drought decree expected to be lifted in Málaga in March

The Junta de Andalucía has said it expects to lift the drought restrictions in force for Málaga city and the Guadalhorce valley, provided that 35 cubic hectometres of water are collected in January and February in the provinces reservoirs.
Thanks to the winter rains the risk of water restrictions have been lifted with the reservoirs now at an average of 34% capacity, although some restrictions remain in force in the eastern Axarquía area. It means that Málaga has tripled its water reserves in just three months.
Meanwhile the work to build a new desalination plant at Mijas has started, albeit after a two year delay. Once completed the plant will supply 20 cubic hectometres a year. It’s being built by the Sacyr company at a cost of 61.7 million €.
