An Almería businessman who wants to remain anonymous has put up a 12,000 € reward for any information which will allow the body of a young man who disappeared from Carboneras a year ago to be recovered.

Joaquín Fernández García was 23 years old when he set off in a Zodiac boat with another man on 11th September 2008. The other man’s version of events was that the boat broke down six miles from the coast and both were forced to try and swim to shore. He was later arrested after being rescued by the crew of a fishing boat, who it’s understood are also under suspicion, and there are some indications, Europa Press reports, of possible drug smuggling. The news agency said the boat had been stolen from the local marina some days previously.

Joaquín’s father, Joaquín Amills, Partido Popular spokesman at Carboneras Town Hall, claims his son’s companion gave three different versions to the Civil Guard of how the 23 year old met his death.

Four other suspects also face charges in the case.
