Real Madrid are thrashed 4-0 by modest Segunda B side Alcorcón in the King's Cup

The largest of upsets in the fourth round of the King’s Cup in Spain on Tuesday night, as modest Segunda B team Alcorcón beat Real Madrid 3-0, and that was only at half time.
Real Madrid’s Arbeloa did hit the netting in the first half, but in his own goal. With Raul, Benzema and Guti all starting for Real Madrid, everyone expected Real to come back in the second half, although Guti was replaced by Gago at half time, but it was soon 4-0 as Borja scored his second for Alcorcón.

Quite how a team which has cost 400 million € to assemble is beaten by one which has cost a mere one million is the question many Spanish commentators are asking, witness to the failures of the Real defence. Ridiculous Real Madrid is a repeated headline, with some saying it was one of the worst performances in the club’s history. The future of the Real manager Pellegrini must surely be in danger. Manuel Pellegrini said after the match that he was embarrassed by his side's performance, but he ruled out any talk of resignation.

As for Alcorcón, they were the night’s giant killers.
What happens in the return leg at the Bernabeu in two weeks remains to be seen, but who would deny Alcorón their moment of glory.

Other results of King's Cup games played on Tuesday:

No similar giant killing for Marbella who were beaten by Atlético de Madrid 0-2, with Quique Sánchez Flores witnessing his first game as manager of the Madrid side. Commentators are putting the win down more to the fears of the Marbella side, than for the skill of Atlético. Once again there was an own goal; Marbella’s Troyano putting the Madrid side ahead, and it was Maxi Rodríguez who scored the second. The return leg in the Calderón is in 15 days time.

Sevilla will be happy with their 2-4 win at Atlético Ciudad, although they had to come back from behind against the Segunda B side. Navas and Capal scored the winning goals.

Sporting Gijön had a good result with the 1-1 at Reacreativo de Huelva in what was by all accounts a dull game which saw the local side go ahead in the 4th minute from Candeias. The equaliser came from Bilic at the start of the second half.
