The fight between the PP Mayor and Regional President of Madrid continues

The Rights and Guarantees Committee of the Partido Popular has called the Deputy Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo, and the President of the Regional Guarantees Committee, Cristina Cifuentes, to declare over the row in the party.

Cobo gave an interview to El País on Monday in which he made harsh attacks on the PP Regional President, Esperanza Aguirre, over her actions re nominations for the new Chairman of Caja Madrid savings banks. Cifuentes has been called as she made the official complaint to the party about Cobo’s behaviour.

The split between the PP Mayor, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and PP Regional President in Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, has never been so clear, with the Mayor checking support for his deputy with a motion of confidence held yesterday. He won by 19 votes to 13, and more support from Cobo has come from Ana Botella.

The wife of José María Aznar has said that Cobo should continue in his post, but 105 of the 110 PP Mayors in the Madrid region have signed a manifesto calling for Cobo to be disciplined.
