Gallardon and Cobo during a planning meeting on Thursday - EFE
Manuel Cobo made harsh criticisms of Esperanza Aguirre in an interview in El País last Monday
The Partido Popular has said that the statements made by party’s Deputy Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo, are ‘unacceptable’ and will be sanctioned.
The party’s secretary general, María Dolores de Cospedal, has apologized to the party’s activists for his words, published in El País last Monday and consisting of a harsh attack on Esperanza Aguirre, the PP president of the regional government, as she said they did not deserve such behavior.
The official response from the party will be made in the meeting set for the party executive on Tuesday when it will be decided whether Cobo is to be removed from his post or not.
Many consider that it is the PP Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, who was behind Cobo’s statements, and that it is part of his ongoing differences with Esperanza Aguirre, this time round over who would make the best Chairman of the Caja Madrid savings bank.
