Britain is the invited country in this sixth edition of the festival
The red carpets are out in Sevilla for European Cinema this week and British films are the centre of attraction as the invited country in this, the sixth edition of the city’s European Film Festival.
The opening gala on Friday night saw the presence of Christopher Lee, and Colin Farrell, as well as top Spanish actors Sergi López and Paz Vega.
Farrell is presenting his latest film, Triage, by the Bosnian director, Danis Tanovic, in which he plays a photo-journalist trapped in the war in Kurdistan in the 90’s. The film was shot in Alicante and Paz Vega plays his wife and Christopher Lee her grandfather.
The Sevilla European Film Week runs until November 14 and more than 150 films will be shown in that time. London producer, Jeremy Thomas, has selected some of his favourite films, and there is a cycle dedicated to Nicholas Roeg, who will be presiding the jury in the official selection. A separate section looks at the new talents of British cinema.
15 films take part in the official competition, of which nine were directed by women. Among those to be honoured in this year’s edition are Fernando Trueba, John Hurt and Ben Kingsley.
The city’s restaurants are running a parallel gastronomy festival over the same week.
