The Mayor of Estepona, David Valadez - EFE
The Town Hall's financial problems mean parents have been asked to contribute toilet paper at their children's school
The Socialist Mayor of Estepona, David Valadez, admitted early last week that the Town Hall did not have enough money to pay all its staff, but La Opinión de Málaga has now confirmed that the order came last Friday to pay the wages of the almost 800 workers in the municipal companies who had yet to receive their pay for October. The Mayor has told the newspaper that the Town Hall is increasing its efforts to prevent a similar situation occurring at the end of this month, when the time comes to pay the wages for November.
The Town Hall has to meet a monthly wages bill of more than 3.5 million € for its 1,300 staff.
But the financial problems affecting Estepona Town Hall are now having their effect on the local schools, El Mundo has revealed. The paper cites one particular case at the Parque Central state school, which has been forced to ask for the help of their pupils’ parents.
A letter went out to parents last Thursday asking them to contribute with a roll of toilet paper and a bottle of liquid soap, after the school was told by the Town Hall that they are unable to provide them with their regular supplies.
