Second arrest in murder of Mayor of Polop de la Marina

A second person has been arrested in connection with the murder of Alejandro Ponsoda, the Partido Popular Mayor of Polop de la Marina who died in October 2007 eight days after he was shot outside his home in Xirles.

The first arrest in the case was announced on 5th November this year, a 34 year old Spaniard, R.M.T., who was wanted in another case for drug dealing and illegal possession of weapons.

The second suspect was arrested in Polop on Sunday afternoon and is named by Diario Información as Salvador R.G., a local businessman who owns a shoe store in the town. It’s understood that one of his former employees was questioned by the Civil Guard on Sunday.
There has been no indication as yet of what charges this latest suspect may face.

Detectives believe the first man arrested acted with two others, believed to be Czechs, who were contracted to kill the Mayor. There has been no confirmation on the possible motive behind the killing.
