A view of the Sierra Espuña - Wikipedia
He fell just 30 metres from reaching the summit of Leiva peak
A mountaineer who was injured while climbing in the Sierra Espuña mountain range is in Intensive Care with severe head injuries after falling while scaling the Leiva peak. He was part of a group of three climbers, believed to be from the Murcia Region, and was just 30 metres from the summit when he fell shortly before 2pm on Monday.
The un-named mountaineer fell onto a ledge some 100 metres above ground level, leaving him unconscious and bleeding from his head.
La Opinión de Murcia reports that the helicopter which rescued the injured man had to make a second trip back to Leiva for his two companions, one of whom had to be treated for shock after seeing his friend fall from the rock face.
The injured mountaineer remains in a serious condition at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
