The phone lines were due to be cut off on Thursday over a 350,000 Euro debt

Telefónica is reported to have given the Town Hall in Estepona more time to pay off their outstanding debt of 350,000 € and has agreed to put a payment plan in place next week. EFE reports that the phone lines had been due to be cut off this Thursday.

The Town Hall is understood to spend some 30,000 € on its land and mobile lines every month.

The local tax councillor, Francisca Bernal, told the news agency that part of the funds to cover the Town Hall’s running costs granted by the Junta de Andalucía will arrive shortly and will be sufficient to cover electricity costs and rubbish collection. The amount to come from the regional government is a quarter of the 500,000 € which were granted to the Town Hall last September.

The councillor added that prompt payment of the 1,300 municipal workers’ November salaries is not yet guaranteed, but said she is confident that any delay will not be as great as it was for last month, when staff were not paid until the 15th of the month.
