It is to become a right as part of the telecommunications universal service
The Industry Minister has promised Broadband Internet as a right to everyone in Spain in 2011, with a guaranteed connection to 1 mega in any part of the country. It will come under what is known as a ‘universal service’, currently supplied by Telefónica, covering telephone connection, telephone directories, phone boxes, and a basic Internet connection.
The universal service is to be opened up to other operators in 2011 and the Industry Minister, Miguel Sebastián, announced this Tuesday that, as part of that service, designated operators must guarantee for a reasonable price a minimum Broadband speed of at least one mega to their users.
Depending on the interest shown from the companies, it’s understood from EFE that different operators will be designated to cover a certain geographic area or for different sectors of the universal service.
