It was a one two for Ferrari in the first race of the new Formula One season

Fernando Alonso won the first Grand Prix of the new Formula One season in Bahrain on Sunday, overtaking his Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa on the first curve to take second place and then getting past the pole position holder Sebastian Vettel when his Red Bull developed mechanical problems.

The 1,2, for Ferrari is the best possible start to the new season for the Italian team, with Lewis Hamilton taking third in the McLaren Mercedes.

The other two Spanish drivers had varying fortune. Jaime Alguersuiari for Toro Rosso completed the race in 13th position, while Pedro de la Rosa had to abandon when running 12th because of hydraulic problems in the Sauber.

King Juan Carlos was at the track to wish Alfonso well, and present to hear the Spanish National Anthem at the end. Alonso said it was a very special day for him to be back on top of the podium, and that there was no better way to start the new season.
