Agreement has been reached on the authorship of 'Double Falsehood'
‘Double Falsehood’ is the name of a work by Shakespeare which is now considered to have been inspired by a character called Cardenio, who appears in ‘Don Quixote de la Mancha’.
The play was written by Shakespeare and John Fletcher, and is typical of theatre from the 18th century. It was performed for the first time in 1727, and presented at the time as being an adaption by Shakespeare, although later the authorship was put in doubt.
Now however the experts have agreed, after ten years spent investigating its origin, that the work was indeed written by Shakespeare, along with his contemporary John Fletcher.
The Royal Shakespeare Company is to produce an adaptation of ‘Double Falsehood’ in Stratford upon Avon next summer.
