Twenty one people have been arrested in an anti-drugs operation which has impounded a Panamanian fishing vessel in the Canaries, loaded with 2,500 kilos of cocaine.

The four crew members of the ‘Mars’ were amongst those arrested. Another seven people were arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, four in Fuerteventura, four in Madrid, and another two in Málaga and Badajoz.

Police say they were all part of a network which brought large quantities of the drug into the country. The Colombian leader of the gang, arrested in Madrid, had been under investigation for more than a year.
The vessel was boarded 30 miles to the north of Tenerife.
