The Fuente de Piedra lagoon is famous for the flamingos it attracts and the migration season is about to start

There has been a stepping up of controls in twenty farms in the Antequera and Fuente de Piedra area because of the threat of bird flu.

The regional government agriculture and fisheries department has said that inspections will now be on a weekly basis. Under the inspections ten animals will be analysed every two weeks, most of them chickens and turkeys.

It comes as the regional government has noticed an increase in the reports it receives of dead birds across the Málaga province region, although it underlines that so far the test of all these cases have returned negative for the Bird Flu virus.
