5 tons of cannabis seized on Granada beach

Two people were arrested, but the boats carrying the rest of the drugs escaped out to sea

A joint operation between Civil Guard and Customs has arrested two Rumanians, in an anti-drugs operation which has seized 5 tons of cannabis on the coast of Granada.

The SIVE electronic surveillance system detected two vessels which were approaching the beach of Albuñol early on Tuesday morning. The Coastguard were sent out from Motril, with helicopter support and support on the ground from the Customs Authorities in Motril.

They arrested the driver of an Almería registered lorry, which was loaded with 138 packages of cannabis. The authorities also seized a Madrid registered BMW and an Alfa Romeo, rented in Alicante. One of the drivers was arrested.
Both the men arrested live in Roquetas del Mar, in Almería.

The two vessels escaped out to sea, throwing the remainder of their cargo overboard. The Civil Guard managed to recover 10 packages of cannabis from the sea.
