Batasuna have meanwhile repeated calls for the peace process to be moved forward
The French Government has warned Spain that ETA is as active now as it was before the cease fire.
Reports speak of the constant movement of the terrorists, car thefts and communications between ETA members held in French jails.
There have also been reports of new extortion letters to raise funds. Revealed in the ‘El Correo’ newspaper, the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, said they would be investigated.
Meanwhile Batasuna, the political wing of ETA, has once again called for advances in ‘agenda and method’ to move the Basque peace process forward, as well as critcising the French comments. The statement from the left wing ‘abertzale’ radicals said that multiple obstacles to progress remained and that an agreement cannot be reached from the ‘old political status quo’.
Over recent weeks street violence and vandalism has increased in the Basque Country, in protest at the new sentence against ETA activist José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, who is now back on hunger strike. Batasuna have said they will make no call for the street violence to stop.
