A man hijacked a taxi in Oviedo and put the taxi driver in the boot at gunpoint

The assailant escaped from Avilés, where the police tried in vain to detain him

The Police established a wide vigilance last night in Avilés (Asturias) and the surroundings in an attempt to capture the youngster who hours earlier had held up a taxi driver at gunpoint and obliged him to drive to the airport.

However, suddenly he stopped the driver and told him he would drive instead and ordered the driver to climb into the boot, a Toyota Prius. Once imprisoned, the gunman took the steering wheel and apparently got lost, according to the professional chauffeur later.

Abandoned and disorientated in the deepest night, the kidnapper returned the taxi driver to the driver’s seat and then sat in the back pointing his gun and ordered him to drive back of Avilés, and on leaving he threatened to kill the taxi driver if he told the Police.

‘The taxi driver was a bag of nerves and was trembling like a leaf’, said one witness as his companions called the Police who sent three patrol cars to the scene. On hearing his testimony, the Police set roadblocks on all the exit roads from Avilés, but without success.

The taxi driver, shocked and unhurt also saw his day’s takings and smartphone had been stolen.
