‘The citizens of Cataluña have won the right to have an independent State which constitutes in the formation of a republic, and in consequence the Government which I preside will present before the Catalan Parliament, the headquarters and expression for the Sovereignty of our people, today’s results which will be accepted under our referendum law’ - the words of Carles Puigdemont.
The day and evening when the Polling Stations closed was marked by serious violence between riot police sent especially to Cataluña and the Guardia Civil trying to close the Polling Stations and stop people from voting, with the elderly and children among the 884 injured by the police aggression.
The Catalan Police, Los Mossos d’Esquadra had given an undertaking to Mariano Rajoy that they would not use aggression during the day, but this saw in fact them abstaining from fighting which the PP Government then complained as being disobedient and has opened an investigation.
Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, affirmed ‘there has been no legal referendum on self-determination, only a mere spectacle, to which the State of Law has responded with efficiency and calmly and today he said he would call all the political parties to the Congress of Deputies to discuss the result and the current situation of Cataluña and to reflect on the future which we all face’.
He said the referendum was not valid as it was not consulted with the rest of Spain and blamed the independents activists for the violence in the streets.
