The Basque Parliament, yesterday approved to ask the Government, via a proposal which the parliamentary groups can take to Congress of Deputies, to modify the Penal Code and amend article 143 with the objective of decriminalising assisted suicide and euthanasia.
‘It is the first step towards a basic civil right’, said Rosalía Miranda, president of the Association Right to Die with Dignity in the Basque Country
An assisted suicide is when another person helps or assesses the person to die, and if this is done by a doctor it is called medically assisted suicide.
Euthanasia is the action or omission of the doctor to procure a painless death and to stop endless suffering. Depending on the regions legislation, the patient may have to meet certain criteria for the process.
All the parties in the Basque chamber, with the exception of the PP, coincided in this individual right is controversial, but they look back at abortion and gay marriage and consequent the PP will not have an overall majority in the next legislature, there is no better time to try and decriminalise.
The Penal Code establishes jail sentences since 1995 when euthanasia was added and fixes sentences between two and ten years.
