The National Police detained last Friday, the parents of a two year old girl after cocaine was found in her blood in the Alicante General Hospital, and yesterday the 38 and 40 year olds were granted provisional release.
However, the duty court agreed the crime of child abandonment given her medical condition. After their arrest they denied any implication for the probable ingestion of cocaine by the girl.
They admitted to being cocaine users and passed the blame onto the step-sister of the victim aged only 13, and the son of the man arrested. However, the Police think this is unlikely and blame the parents for possible carelessness or negligence and for intoxicating the girl.
The alarm was raised on Friday afternoon, when the National Police was informed of the admission to the Alicante General Hospital of two year old suspected victim of domestic violence.
A specialised police Unit for Family and Woman attention from the Alicante Provincial Police Station, who found the child in the paediatric ward and were informed on her state of health, who had arrived showing panic attacks, dizziness and failing to control her extremities.
A toxicology test found traces of cocaine in her blood and then the parents were immediately taken into custody for a lack of parental control as legally demanded.
Next, their home was searched by the Police who found traces of narcotics, although the father was found to be carrying in a dose of cocaine when still in the Police Station.
Therefore the detectives suspected ‘the girl could have out of curiosity followed her parents’ example’ according to the Alicante Police Station in a statement.
The couple remained in custody all weekend in the cells in the Police Station and yesterday were placed before the duty court.
The parents denied supplying the drug to their daughter, or having left it out at her reach for her to accidentally have taken it.
The two year old is progressing well and remained in hospital yesterday. Social Services from the Generalitat will take care of her on her release.
