Fiestas

The dreadful spectacle that is ‘Toro de la Vega’ was seen again yesterday in the town of Tordesillas (Valladolid)

Toro de Vega consists of crowds of people, including children, chasing the bull through the town streets until they reach the Vega, the meadow where the end game takes place.

Should the bull manage to escape from the meadow he would be pardoned but that hasn’t happened for many years.

Men riding on horseback with pointed lances try to kill the bull and the man who succeeds in doing so is considered a hero. Some say the fiesta is a medieval tradition, but leaving bullfighting aside, few fiestas in Spain generate such a mayor outburst from protestors.

This year some 100 protestors were moved on by the Guardia Civil after their failed attempt to stop the savagery.

The villagers were not impressed and scuffles and insults took place between the two sides. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt, except of course the chosen bull killed later in the day.

The Guardia Civil carried some of the protestors away.

Last weekend in Madrid, a thousand demonstrators marched against the Toro de la Vega
