On Sunday Nico Casal attended the London Short Film Festival in Hackney, which was the location where he recorded under the orders of the Irish director, Benjamin Cleary.
The causalities of life brought the two men together when Casal met Cleary when playing table tennis while he was still writing the screenplay. After discovering each others occupation, their collaboration started with a coffee and reading of screenplay which seemed very good.
‘It was a grand experience as a composer to write the screenplay and to participate in all the processes, explained the youngster from Santiago, who trained as a pianist in Vigo.
Casal was very happy to be in Hackney ‘surrounded by friends’ and attended the London Short Film Festival to present his short film which has already been shown in more than 30 festivals and has won ten prizes.
Now the team behind ‘Stutterer’ is waiting nervously until Thursday when the final selection of four short films will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the 88th of the Oscars which takes place in February.
‘I’m flying, we are all nervous as anything can happen’ he commented while he explained many specialist publications on cinema had reported on his work.
Nico Casal has been living in London for four years, after he arrived to take a Masters in Film Music. In the next few months the premiere of a new film María y los demás (Maria and the others) and the musical soundtrack was composed by him.
The short film ‘Stutterer’ is about a lonely man, an online relationship has helped him mask his cruel speech impediment. A roller-coaster ride of joy, doubt and romance in the digital age.
