More than 40 fires approaching homes in Ourense

‘If someone is capable of setting a fire with a temperature over 40º and with a changeable wind, he can only be called an assassin.’

So said the Galician Councillor for the Environment, Ángeles Vázquez, who also described the situation in Ourense province as ‘very critical’ as a consequence of the smaller fires have joined to make two large ones in Muiños and Oímbra, where at total of 1,000 hectares of forest has been burned.

The regional representative lamented in declarations to the press, this ‘terrible day’ for Galicia, after declaring ‘more than 40 fires’ in situations of emergency given the closeness of housing, declared as a precautionary measure, a panorama for ‘indignation’. She called for harsher punishments.

These two forest fires are the most important to be suffered in the province of Ourense. Numerous teams of land and in the air are trying to control both fires which continue active.
In addition other fires have broken out in Olelas, Entrimo and Boborás where residents are on alert.

The Xunta de Galicia has activated the so-called ‘Situation 2’ (warning for the proximity of homes) in the forest fire declared in the Ourense municipality of Muiños. In fact the flames have reached the parish of Raquiás, and hence the level 2.

The fire has already burned more than 500 hectares in the Xurés Nature Park. It started on Monday and was brought under control in the early hours of Tuesday, but took hold again this morning because of the intense heat and changing winds.

Another forest fire has been declared in the Orense municipality of Oímbra where 60 residents live and they have been evacuated, although many have decided to protect their homes and fight the flames. Mayor of the hamlet, Ana María Villarino, said yesterday ‘nobody will sleep tonight’.
