15 Griffin Vultures have been found poisoned by suspects at large

The Seprona environmental service of the Guardia Civil with the anti-venom environmental unit, are searching for the suspect who has committed the worst attack against wildlife for the past ten years

Fifteen Griffin Vultures have been found dead by poisoning in the Sierra de Zafarraya and the two investigating bodies with the collaboration of the Environmental Council in Granada.

‘This is the worst offence against wildlife in Granada province registered in the last ten years, given that in 2011 two Osprey were poisoned in the Sierra de Castril, but in the last decade never has so much wildlife been killed at the same time’ argued Borja Nevot chief manager of the Environmental Service in Granada.

A forest guard, based in the Sierra de Zafarraya, gave the alarm on 28 September. He observed how the flock of Griffin Vultures were behaving strangely, being unable to take to flight, and tragically when he reached the area he found all the birds of prey had died,

The cadavers of the Griffin Vultures are currently in the Analysis and Diagnostic Centre for Wildlife in Málaga, where they will try to determine the exact cause of death, although it seems most probable that someone had left a piece of poisoned lamb.

The largest colony of the Griffin Vultures in Granada, a species not yet at risk, are found in the Sierra de Castril and it is supposed that these two birds came from there or from the Sierra de Málaga, which is closer to Zafarraya.
‘They are carrion birds that can fly over long distances, and hence the choice of Sierra.

Seprona has not ruled out trying to obtain DNA to nail the culprit which they managed in 2012, using a pioneering method for Europe, which labelled the shepherd who was judged and condemned.

DNA taken from poisoned bait can be matched to the blood from the flock of 73 sheep and the taken DNA is being held in reserve.
