Around 10am began in the Granada Provincial Court the judgement against father Román M.V.C. for presumed sexual and child abuse against the minor ‘Daniel’, fictitious name, being underage. The accused entered the court without speaking.
In the first moments of the hearing, the priest’s defence, exercised by the lawyer Javier Muriel Navarrete, who presented the letter which he was sent last weekend in which the Vatican State Secretary communicated before the start of proceedings, and read ‘we confer in the principle of innocence and the absolute independence of the courts’.
Simultaneously, he requested the nullity of part of the Canonical accusation, a petition which was not accepted by the tribunal.
During the interrogation, father Román denied maintaining any sexual conduct with Daniel or any other boys. ‘Absolutely not, never’ he manifested strongly. The uniquely accused of child abuse assured all his behaviour was guided by ‘Christian Love’
The accused, for which the prosecutor wants nine years in prison for sexually abusing a minor, assured that he ‘assessed’ the complaining youngster at different moments of his life and denied ever using any coercion for sex or for sharing a bed: ‘I have never thought of sleeping with another person’. ‘I have never kissed on the mouth or received a kiss on the mouth’ said the only suspect, and he had distanced himself from the boy who was living ‘a double life’ and added he maintained an conciliatory relationship with his girlfriend who told him that he was harassing him.
Father Román denied any knowledge from other priests whose lives he shared of any occurrence of homosexual activity ‘of any type’ and defended the letter he had signed with ‘I love you much’ was an expression of Cristian Love.
