At 8pm this evening the Granada soprano Mariola Cantarero will perform accompanied by Mercedes Encisco on piano.

The archives of the new centre remain empty as it’s considered the security requirements are still to be met, and so the archives about the Granada poet will remain in the Students Residence in Madrid.

The missing archives are a symptom of the years of delay in opening the centre which is located in the central plaza de la Romanilla, next to Granada Cathedral.

The first exhibition will be held in September in the new centre, but the rest of the program until the end of this year has still to be approved by the Governing Council of the Consortium of the Centre, as proposed by the García Lorca Foundation, which could also be in September.

The Culture Councillor for Andalucía, Rosa Aguilar, and the mayor of Granada, José Torres Hurtado will be in attendance among others and will be given a tour of the centre which is destined to study, project and promote the life and work of the author of ‘Poet in New York’ and a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.

The soprano and pianist will play three Lorca poems and three popular songs by Manuel de Falla. The concert will end with the performance of the young Norwegian violinist Guro Kleven Hagen, with the pianist Gunner Flagstad.

The land, which has been ceded by the Granada City Hall, and has a total size of 4,700 square metres and it will in turn look after the conservation and care of the archives and it will be funded by the García Lorca Foundation.

The cultural centre has an exhibition hall of 500 metre squared and a theatre with capacity for 424 people and equipped to present all types of events and in addition there is a workshop area which is flooded by natural light and can be transformed by mobile screens.

The exhibition hall has controlled temperature, humidity and special protection lights to protect the artwork, also a strong room to hold the most valuable items, an archive, shop and cafeteria.

The García Lorca Foundation as ready to display some 5,000 manuscripts by the poet, 3,000 from other authors, some 50 contemporary art drawings from Salvador Dalí or Ismael de la Serna, with a photograph and newspaper archives.

The inauguration of the Lorca Centre has suffered numerous delays for economic reasons, but the financing was finally fixed on June 5, the poet’s birthday. However another delay was caused when the Culture Ministry called in the Lorca Foundation to justify the millionaire grants conceded for the construction.
Currently the foundation has a debt of 12 million € without payment of justification owed to, among others, the builder of the centre Ferrovial which wanted to pay homage to the memory of the poet, and has now completed their work, but they said they would be holding back the keys waiting for the debt to be paid; and the Culture Ministry is claiming 1.7 million € for the nominative subsidies conceded to the space in the Plaza de la Romanilla.

The infighting in the foundation led the president to present a legal complaint against the institution’s secretary, Juan Tomás Martin for alleged document falsification and illicit appropriation, after which he was let go.

The foundation, which met recently to study the accounts, has guaranteed ‘a deep’ investigation on all the irregularities which have been found in the accounts of the cultural centre.
