1512 - The Spanish Crown issues the Laws of Burgos, governing the conduct of settlers with regard to native Indians in the New World.
1836 - The Spanish Government recognises the independence of Mexico.
1870 - Attack on General Juan Prim in Madrid. Hit by several shots, he died three days later.
1936 - In the middle of the Spanish Civil War, Santander is bombarded by Franco's aviation, producing about 70 dead and 50 wounded among civilians. As a reply, 156 prisoners of the prison boat Alfonso Pérez are killed that day.
1968 - Over 5,000 Asturian miners on strike, even though it is illegal in Spain.
1978 - King Juan Carlos I sanctions the Spanish Constitution previously approved by parliament, and ratified by the people of Spain in a referendum held on 6th December 1978, now celebrated as el Día de la Constitución Española, a national holiday in Spain.
1983 - The Congress of Deputies validates the decree-law on industrial reconversion.
1985 - Barcelona officially requests the organization of the Olympic Games.
