1580 - The author of Don Quijote, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, was freed from captivity and enslavement in Algeria on 19th September 1580 following his capture while returning to Spain in 1575.

1771 - Order of Carlos III, the highest Spanish civilian honor is created.
1868 - Naval uprising in Cádiz during the reign of Isabel II of Spain saw the start of the revolution which would become known as ‘La Gloriosa’ – ‘The Glorious Revolution, which led to the monarchy being briefly ousted in Spain and the establishment of the short-lived First Republic.
1880 - In Logroño the Teatro Bretón de los Herreros is opened.
1923 - A Royal Decree forbids separatism in Spain.
1935 - The scandal of the black market produced a government crisis in Spain.
1998 - Julio Anguita is dismissed as general secretary of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE).
