The tragedy happened on the road which unites Sant Josep with Cala Vedella, according to the Guardia Civil who confirmed the deaths of the driver (aged 21) and the pillion passenger (aged 19)
The collision happened just before 6pm at Kilometre 3 in the municipality of Sant Josep. The passenger died instantly and the driver died at the scene an hour later. Two 061 ambulances went to the scene, and the health professionals tried to save the biker who was still alive.
Several patrols from the Guardia Civil Traffic attended. Their evidence gathering team have opened an investigation into the cause. First indications indicate the bikers had crossed into the other lane and hit the lorry. Behind them were another couple of bikers their friends, and both couples had hired the motorbikes of 125 cc. The lorry driver tested negative for drink and drugs.
This year has been particularly tragic on the roads of Ibiza and Formentera with 17 fatalities so far this year, more than double all of last year. Nine of them were motorbike riders, eight died on Ibiza and the other on Formentera.
The double death came a day after another tragedy on the roads, when in Formentera a 25-year-old Italian from Bergamo, a local resident, Paolo Avogadri, died in the early hours on the main road at Savina a la Mora at Km4 – when he was speeding and BMW sports car, and left the road on a curve.
