The experts are on onboard MV Cheshire to evaluate the situation of the British vessel

Their first task is to cool down the ship from inside using special lances that are able to inject water at the exact hottest spot.

Fire extinguishing specialists from Holland and Gibraltar, mobilised by the US Resolve Marine, are already inside the burning vessel, MV Cheshire, which has been drifting since August 14. They are valuing the possibilities according to the owner Bibby Line Limited, after yesterday when it was hooked onto one of the four tugboats that were in place since Sunday as the weather has now improved.

The cargo ship is currently being towed towards the NE of El Hierro with a velocity of 2.5 knots, and is located at 120 nautical miles SW of the island. The labours of the technicians are being supported by a helicopter, brought from Mali last Sunday, and which will be used to lower the experts onto the vessel whenever necessary ‘despite them gaining access from the sea’ noted Maritime Capitan, Pedro Mederos, who is supplying the specialists with any gear they may need inside the hull of the ship.

The work now consists in valuing the situation, quantifying the financial cost, and to see if the vessel remains seaworthy after the fire has been completely extinguished by the professionals, noted sources linked to the owner of MV Cheshire. Guaranteeing ‘it can be towed the 30 nautical miles from the coast, provided all safety concerns have been settled, and once at land the completion of the work is easier’.

Mederos, for his part, says ‘the labours of cooling are centred on bodegas two and three, because in four and five the fire has been extinguished’, although three is the only one still ablaze and concern it will spread to bodega two. In addition, ‘while working inside, fighting against the chemical reaction is a drawn out process as it being towed’

The Capitan knows outside intervention is not enough to quell the flames and the resulting chemical reaction, so boarding is essential despite the use of the special lances called ‘Victor’, which pointed at the hot spots using infrared cameras are used to complete the task.
