A baby has been found alive in a Madrid rubbish bin

The boy aged between a week and ten days, had been left inside a rucksack inside the bin in the Madrid district of Mejorada del Campo.

The hero rescuers are two members of the Guardia Civil who responded to a phone call to 062 at 7.21 am yesterday morning from a local who has been walking his dog and thought he heard a baby crying in an underground rubbish installation in the Avenida de los Toreros.

The Guardia Civil went to the location and were joined by firemen from Madrid, Summa the Madrid outside hospital health service, and the company contracted by the City Hall for rubbish collection.

The underground rubbish facility needed a crane to extract the container which the baby was in, and one of the Guardia Civil told ABC newspaper
‘The crane didn’t arrive, the baby didn’t stop crying, we feared the worst’.

After the personnel from the rubbish collection service managed to lift the container out of the ground, the two Guardia Civil, Carlos and Andrés, found the baby inside a rucksack and took the newborn in their patrol car to the Henares hospital where doctors are keeping the baby under observation.

The Judicial Police has opened an investigation to identify the parents and the Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances of when the baby was abandoned.
