The socialist party wants to prohibit diesel cars in central Madrid from 2020

The PSOE candidate for the Madrid mayor, Antonio Miguel Carmona, promised yesterday if he wins the election he would follow the example of Paris.

The Mayor of Paris, socialist Anne Hidalgo, said a month ago
‘I want the end of diesel in 2020’, but she did not hesitate to say she would have to study possible exceptions.

Days before her announcement, a report revealed about an episode of high levels of pollution on the streets of Paris which was equivalent to eight smokers in a 20 square metre room.

No similar study has been made in Madrid but official measurements showed in January the city suffered level well above the healthy.

London has introduced a plan to give economic help to diesel owners to change their vehicle.

The Partido Popular had looked at other cities where alternate cars using odd or even number plates, would in theory cut the pollution in half. They said they would introduce it last July, and there is still no sign of it.

The Madrid Regional Government understands the concern about diesel but doubts the 2020 date is possible. Their figures show the crisis has doubled the age of the cars which drive in Madrid, from 5.7 years in 2008 to 9.3 years in 2013 and seven out of ten are diesel.

Electric cars amount to only 0.05% and Ana Botella the development minister, has called on the EU to put pressure on the car manufacturers.
