The main duty of HMS Duncan is to protect the allied vessels from possible air attacks, using the vanguard missile system Sea Viper. It can also act against piracy, bring aid to catastrophic disaster areas and customs duties. Hosting Chinook helicopters and space aboard for 60 naval infantries.

Home to 190 sailors, 152 metres long, and 21.2 metres wide with a water displacement of 8,000 tons.

The vessel was opened to the public on Tuesday morning at the Levante quay, after being the scenario for the reception of dignitaries on Monday night with many local civil and military meetings to underline the excellent defence cooperation between Spain and the United Kingdom
Frigate Capitan Eleanor Stack, the first woman to direct a destroyer of this type, and also Commodore Michael Utley, the maximum responsible for the Standing Maritime Group of NATO.

‘I am charmed to have brought this insignia ship from the SNMG2 to Málaga’ said the Briton, who left with his crew on the HMS Duncan from Portsmouth at the start of this year.

‘Maintaining a close relationship between all NATO countries is key to assure the stability and security in the Mediterranean’ said the Commodore, whose Spanish counterpart is (OF-6).

It is the second time that this destroyer has visited Spain, last year it docked in Palma de Mallorca and over the next months the SNMG-2 will realise diverse multinational manoeuvres and security operations to develop the interoperability between the NATO naval forces, which last summer were under the orders of the Spanish Armada.

Destroyer HMS Duncan will also participate in the Kipion British naval operation in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, with some thirty allied countries.

Based in Portsmouth, HMS Duncan, was baptised at the Govan dockyards in 2010, owned by BAE Systems and joined the Royal Navy fleet in September 2013. Baptised in honour of Admiral Duncan, who beat the Dutch in the battle of Camperdown in 1797, and is twinned with Belfast and Dundee.
